Recently during some quarantine decluttering I found a note I’d written in one of my teenage journals. On a single page, written in big, black cursive letters it said: The Island, a well known newspaper in New York City, source for goings on around the island and the stories within it. And beneath, circled, it read ONE DAY complete with exclamation point.
I didn’t start a well known New York City newspaper, or anything close to that. But I do run this site, Style Island. A destination dedicated to my love of Manhattan, what goes on inside it, and the stories it keeps.
Starting as a hobby in 2012, I began monetizing almost five years ago. Since then, I’ve come a long way. Partnering with brands I never dreamed, and writing about interesting places, restaurants and events in the city and outside of New York. I’ve gotten some great acclaim. But I still haven’t brought the website to its full potential. I’m never at a lack for content but have struggled with finding my niche, my people, and my place as a writer.
On the other hand, I wondered if I should give myself some credit. I wanted to make my writing and my website a success. Who knew that in a way, I had, in fact, manifested that childhood dream!
Armed with the discovery of this childhood note I felt like a grown up Peter Pan. As if realizing I’d had this idea since childhood was what I needed to confirm my calling as a writer. I felt a renewed purpose to share stories and propel my voice.
So it was an easy decision to partner with new book, Traffic Secrets by Russell Brunson and partake in his 30 day challenge. Brunson, known for his successful million dollar company Click Funnels has dedicated his career to helping aspiring entrepreneurs. Following in the steps of his other ‘Secret’ books, (DotCom Secrets, and Expert Secrets) Traffic Secrets provides timeless strategies and necessary tools to help build readership and sustain site traffic.

Participating in the 30 day challenge makes it more manageable by giving you small, daily steps and activities. All aimed at increasing your site’s traffic. It starts with putting serious introspection into three key things. What your product is, (for me, and many others, not a tangible item, but our writing), who its for, and then where to find those people.
This entails one of the biggest takeaways from Traffic Secrets by Russell Brunson:
The importance of creating and nurturing your list of 100 desired customers. Or as Brunson calls it, The Dream 100. It’s the backbone and heart of Traffic Secrets.
The idea is detailed yet simple. In order to build a successful, high traffic site, you must first put in the research and work to truly learn your reader or dream customer. This means learning their habits. Then figuring out where to locate and engage with them.
As Russell says, (quoting the book Dig your Well Before you’re Thirsty) you can’t wait until your product is ready to start building relationships. In order to “work your way in” with your coveted audience, you have to start with the foundation.
Brunson is brilliant at taking detailed techniques and simplifying them into easy to implement ideas.
Unfortunately I didn’t quite follow that method five years ago when I started my site. Now I’m going back to the basics each day with Traffic Secrets. The plan? To rebuild my ideas and brand from the foundation, up. I can’t wait to see what develops from here.
