How you can find Paris in NYC

It was a whirlwind, but we finally returned home from our European honeymoon and right on schedule, reality was there to greet us hello. Soon, the dreamy days of Amsterdam and Paris would feel like a million years ago. But for now, they still linger freshly in my head. Lest I plummet into reality too fast, I found one more reason to hold on tight. Today, it turns out, is National Macaroon Day. Which means I get to mimic my temporary Parisian lifestyle just one day longer. But apparently, there’s no reason to feel that way, or even give up that lifestyle, (if I so choose). Because although I live on the island of Manhattan, it’s still possible to live, even if only a little, like a Parisian. There is actually quite a bit out there, if you’re looking for it. For those Frenchies visiting our lovely city, or just Francophiles, there are plenty of ways to find a little bit of Paris in NYC.

1. Have a coffee and a macaroon at L’aduree. The Parisian restaurant and bakery oozes with authentic charm, and their colorful Macaro0n displays are worthy of any Insta feed. I passed by the signature, mint green awning several times while in Paris and of course couldn’t help but go inside. As usual, a very photo worthy array of goodies was displayed. The colors, so bold and cool, they literally scream with style. But while the flagship may remain in the city of lights, our version also adds a little flair too. And what better day to treat yourself than on the national holiday of the Macaroon.

2. Eat a sandwich at Croque Monsieur. We think of outside New York City as slower, but in Paris, everyone seems to eat their sandwiches on the go. Everywhere you look, mouths are breaking off bites of baguette from inside a white paper bag. Capitalizing on this notion of sandwiches on the go, Croque Monsieur was born. The tiny, unassuming University lunch spot turns out delicious sandwiches of the same name daily, and prides itself on its historic location. 3. Visit FIAF. The French Institute Alliance Francaise, on 57th street, is a haven for Parisians in NYC, or just those who love them. As the city’s main cultural center for all things French, the institute frequently holds events, wine tastings and classes on various Francais focused themes. This month kicks off several exciting events, including the Films on the Green summer movie series which is celebrating its 10th anniversary. It begins Friday June 2nd with host Wanda Sykes. If fashion is more your thing, don’t miss the talk with iconic Accessories designer Pierre Hardy on June 8th. Tickets are $25. ($10 with Student ID, or $20 for FIAF members). Get more info and buy here.

4. Take a bread making class at Le Pain Quotien.  The upscale bakery and sandwich chain is a great place to work without annoyance. But many might not know they also host bread and pizza making classes. Channel your inner baguette loving french side, and sign up now. Classes run every month and are COMPLETELY FREE!

5. Hit up the French Cheese Board. The French Cheese Board in Soho is the perfect spot to take in some major Paris flavor. Peruse various French cheeses, take classes, and generally indulge in the place that calls itself “an ambassador of the french cheese experience”.
