What happens when one of the most stylish, famous, recognizable athletes in the world decides to partner up with a sports drink?
Well, it’s only fitting that it would have to be just as stylish, sleek, and winning. PowerCOCO is touted as the next generation of sports drinks, #TNGSD, (Click here to check out why on twitter). And not only is Carmelo Anthony the face of it, as well as EVP of innovation, with a total of 5 g of sugar and coconut water as one of the leading ingredients making it one of the first healthy sports drinks, it’s arrival is sure to make a serious power play.
When Duane Reade asked me, as of their VIP bloggers, to spend the day shadowing Anthony as he toured 5 different, big Duane Reades throughout Manhattan, I jumped at the chance to see him on his big, first day as the EVP of #TNGSD, PowerCOCO. Apparently, the day was to bring more then a few surprises.
At first I was skeptical about an almost sugar free sports drink. Could it taste good? I do love coconut water, but in my lemon lime sports drink? I was pleasantly amazed, and surprised when after downing 3 different flavors, the lemon lime turned out to, of course, be my favorite one. I sampled my drinks, and watched as the crowds lined up at 100 Broadway, the new Duane Reade off of Pine street to see Carmelo.
My next surprise came from Anthony himself. I almost expected a diva-esque, typical athlete in my midst. But when Carmelo arrived, not only was he gracious, he was funny, unassuming (as much as someone that tall can be), and took picture, after picture with each fan excitedly waiting for him.
The fans lined up with fervor, store after store, starting at 100 Broadway, and making our way throughout the financial district, to Union Square, and up to Herald Square. The excitement grew as they met, and chatted with the Knicks player, while also sampling PowerCOCO, as well as getting first dibs at the new drink. At 2 for $4, and the 3rd one free with receipt, powerCOCO flowed, and people voted on their favorite flavors, in an interactive poll.
The new drink also snapped away at all fan pictures, and all those fans, including those who didn’t get to take a picture, can currently go on Facebook and see the images, or find the one of themselves with Carmelo.
The day brought out lots of different fans; young girls, excited sports fanatics, older, younger, male, female, but one thing that was common throughout all of us was a shared enthusiasm in the excitement of the day. The Duane Reades were packed, the fans got a chance to meet someone special, and Carmelo took on his exciting new job as EVP and ambassador of PowerCOCO. The Knicks might have lost the championship THIS year, but all in all, I would say it was WIN – WIN that day.
