Summer in the city. Outdoor movies, trips to the beach, freezing offices, and for many, a renewed motivation to get active. Luckily, summer also brings with it countless free NYC workout classes too. There are dozens of gym options but most can put a bit of a dent in your wallet. City summers might not be for everyone but they do have some pros. Including an array of affordable and free fitness classes and yoga sessions for all. From outdoor yoga, to walking and running clubs, the options are endless. Here’s a list of some of the free NYC workout classes going on now through summer. In many cases, they’re ongoing series that head right into the lovely fall season. Motivation not included.

Bryant Park Yoga – Tuesdays at 10 am, Thursdays at 6 pm.
Educators community yoga class – Athleta – Mondays 5 pm.
Community yoga flow – Lululemon at Hub Seventeen – Sundays 10:15 am
Community yoga – Elizabeth St Garden – Sundays 11 am
Hotel 50 Bowery’s The Tribe – A group of professional NYC women who host weekly events. Register early as these fill up fast. The next class featured is Acroyoga Basics in Long Island City on July 22nd.
Sunrise and sunset yoga – Union Square South & North Plaza – Thursdays 7 am, and 7:30 pm.
Laughter yoga – Better Health Chiropractic Clinic (825 7th ave) – Wednesdays, 6 pm. This free weekly class mixes yoga with laughter exercises.
Community yoga with the lovely Ko Im – Church of St. Francis Xavier (46 W 16th St) – Tuesdays, 6 pm. What could be more visually pleasing and peaceful than yoga inside a beautiful church? Suggested Donation.
Central Park yoga – Strawberry Fields – Wednesdays, 6:30 pm. Grab free tickets here.
Healthy on the Hudson – Hudson River Park Pier 46 – Thursdays, 6:3o pm. (Through September 12th). More details on their free NYC workout classes below.
Community classes at Athleta. One of the greatest deals in New York City was the free NYC workout classes in the Athleta store studios. Almost too good to be true in New York City. It seemed Athleta would eventually figure this out too, and alas, they did. They discontinued the program, and now classes are available for package, or single deals. But they didn’t do away with free classes completely. Many of the community classes, including yoga, and a few other weekly workouts stayed on the roster. Check out the schedule here. They also host a run club every Thursday at 6:45 pm.
Community cardio -Lululemon at Hub Seventeen- every Saturday 10:15 am
Summer in the Square series – Union Square- Every Thursday in the mornings and evenings. Yoga, Tai chi, and cardio, 9 am. The free NYC workout classes in the evening begin at 5:30 pm. They include dance cardio, cardio HIIT, the Paragon Sports running club, and a sunset yoga class.
The Sweat Sessions – Hudson River Park (14th & 10th) – Tuesday nights, 6 pm through 8pm. Every year the Meatpacking District & Wellth Collective host a weekly workout series. The outdoor classes begin in May and go through the summer. They include yoga, bootcamp, dance cardio, boxing, and more. Three 45 minute classes that start at 6 pm, and end at 8:45. Head to the nearby Samsung 837 afterwards for a complimentary cool down with bites and sips.
BollyX Class – Various locations throughout July and August, 6:30-7:30. Bolly X is a Bollywood inspired dance fitness class. To educate people about this cool fitness craze they’re hosting weekly and monthly free sessions. All open to the public. Learn more and get full dates and locations here.
Summer sweat series – New Balance store (Flat iron, NY) – Every Sunday in July, 9-10:00 am. The annual free nyc workout classes include running, zumba, and HIIT workouts.
Cardio Ballet – The Ballet Spot – Sundays, 11:30 am. This cardio ballet class is a revamp of traditional dance fitness. They even provide ballet slippers to early arrivals.
Healthy on the Hudson – Hudson River Park – Every Monday, Wednesday and Thursday, 6:30 pm. The series returns for its 20th anniversary season to get you fit for free, on the waterfront. Wednesday events sponsored by Lululemon include a variety of challenging classes.
Shape Up NYC – Varied Locations – Tuesdays, various times. Shape Up NYC is a workout series with the NYC parks. All five boroughs host a variety of free nyc workout classes. They include yoga, aerobics, pilates, zumba and more. Everything is free, plus no prior registration is necessary. Just show up! Look through all the classes here.
JackRabbit – The store hosts free fitness classes as well as a running club. All scheduling info here.
Run club with Chelsea Piers Fitness – Chelsea Piers Brooklyn – Wednesdays, 6:30 pm. Saturdays, 8 am. For those training, or just looking for a community run.
Meditation & breathing techniques – Elizabeth St Garden – Saturdays 1 pm
Mindful Mondays – Lululemon (75th & Bway) – 8:15 to 9pm first Monday of every month
Stoop Meditation – Brooklyn (453 Washington Ave) – Thursdays, 7:30 am. A free guided meditation on a Brooklyn stoop with the local community. You can’t get more New York than that. Find them on Instagram or Facebook @stoopmeditation.
