The definition of Coddiwomple is venturing into the unknown in a purposeful manner. This is the phrase upon which Coddiwomple Sandwiches was born. Their menu of internationally inspired sandwiches is made with all fresh, farm to table ingredients. All “traceable and with world class techniques”.
Those who stuck it through New York City at it’s lowest point, in March 2020, know all too well what Covid did our island. But despite the loss, and change, good does grow. While other longtime neighborhood establishments are closing, new places are emerging. Last month was the grand opening of new kid on the block, (First avenue to be exact), Coddiwomple.
To celebrate, they gave out free half sandwiches to anyone stopping by, (via a free downloaded app). The sandwich spot adds to the list of new places evolving around Stuyvesant Town in the last year. I’m also nervous to have it so close by. ( I’m somewhat of a sandwich addict.)
At 41, I still enjoy them all the time. So I couldn’t be happier to have a new place. And turns out, Coddiwomple sandwiches are delicious.
The chicken salad, or as they call it, Savannah Smash, is literally the best I’ve ever had – no joke.
The El Cubano- their forte- is my husband’s choice. A leg of pork, slow cooked, with smoked Virginia ham, Swiss cheese, sweet pickles, and mustard on Portuguese bread. He rated it highly – and this from a particularly opinionated critic.
A turkey sandwich for dinner is always a good idea. So we ordered the double decker Coddi Clubs one evening. What I got was unexpected. An amalgamation of turkey, bacon, and Swiss cheese, with avocado, tomato, and Russian dressing on thick White bread. I couldn’t fit it in my mouth – I had to take bites from the side. It was glorious.
Soups, (the tomato is superb), grain bowls, and salad are also offered. But lets be honest – if you’re here, you’re having the sandwiches.
Coddiwomple originated in Williamsburg, Brooklyn. The East Village outpost is the third location in the city. It’s a breathe of fresh air and an exciting addition to a neighborhood that needed it.
