Checks & BALANCE~ Keep yourself in Check with the new Balance Rewards program at Duane Reade

These days everything is about what u can get, and how much u can get it for. We’re constantly bombarded with daily deals and coupons, so many that I can create a new account just to file all the emails. And yet, in an age when everyone is primed to get a deal, save a penny, and then share it, were still always looking for the best bang for that buck. In that vein, the news that Duane Reade was changing their rewards program was quite exciting news.

These days the drugstore rewards programs are universal. Everybody’s doing it, but what are we really looking for? One that actually rewards for shopping and more importantly, that offers deals on things we actually need and want, rather then spending frivolous money on things we don’t need just because its on sale. (Its a serious problem, I could be a spokesperson for this issue). And Duane Reade’s new balance rewards which replaces their flex program is doing just that; discounts on what you actually need. As well as a points system that now rewards you faster. Everything is smarter now, not just the points, but the actual rewards also. Now, instead of printed on your receipt or waiting to find out what you earn, you can redeem your points right away at the register, and faster then ever. Redeeming starts at only 5000 points, and now, you also earn faster, earning ten points for every dollar spent, meaning you’ll be rewarded faster then your morning Groupon and Living Social emails can flood your inbox.

When I was asked by the VIP blogger team to make the switch, and document what I got and how I saved, my first thought was that I needed a theme. I always have a story line,  but this time I was all over the place. I needed Halloween stuff, toiletries, as always the list is endless. I couldn’t focus, and wandered aimlessly through every aisle, even though I had already done the metaphorical web version of that earlier when scoping out the Duane reader online. This is your best resource, because not only can you make a list at home before your visit, you can now see what will give you the best deal, and earn you the most rewards.

But still now, in store I was unusually lost. After trying to streamline I re channeled my focus and remembered all the great makeup deals I had seen online earlier. When I grabbed the reader (always available at every entrance) I found my makeup deals, and make my way to the Revlon section. After some heavy debating, I narrowed it down to two eyebrow pencils I was in desperate need of, as well as a pink polish. But I also needed a new highlighter for those pesky under eye circles, and there was an amazing deal for these products. Ten dollars spent earned you a whopping 2000 points, and the product was on sale to boot.

At checkout, I excitedly discovered that my purchase, and additional point earnings had taken me to 5,000 points, meaning I had already, in the short time of their new roll out, earned $5!

I had my new makeup, and $5 to spend for my next errand list, which of course I had already begun making in my head. I walked into that Soho store unusually lost, without composure, but with the help of Duane Reade, and the rewards program, I finally found my balance.
