5 Little Ideas for Nyc st Patrick’s day Celebrations

Today is St Patricks Day, and most NYC neighborhoods will see their bars filled with rowdy drinkers, young people, and of course lots of shamrocks and green. But like so many overhyped holidays (New Years Eve, Halloween parade, just to name a few), the evening spent out inside the confines of a bar is best left to the amateurs. Professionals know that a city celebration doesn’t have to incorporate any flash to be fun. These five little ideas for putting some fun into your NYC st patrick’s day prove exactly that.

You still have several hours left to celebrate and these ideas take minimal effort.

1.Try whiskey Ice Cream at OddFellows. Stop by the Brooklyn ice cream shop for their latest creation; a whiskey ice cream flight in honor of, what else, St. Patricks Day! Flavors include Dead Rabbit Irish coffee (from the eponymously named cocktail bar) and a Knappogue castle 12 year single malt Irish whiskey. Available through April. oddfellowsnyc.com

2. Get a drink at an authentic Irish bar. Keep in mind this is not where to take your bar crawl. For those seeking a more ‘real’ feel to St Pattys day in NYC or those Irish expats now calling the island home, Swift Hibernation Lounge is the perfect place to grab a seat, and pour a pint. Located on Fourth street in the East Village it has long been known for its authentic feel, vast array of beers, and huge selection of Irish whiskeys. Named for Jonathan Swift, the Irish patriot and writer, the bar pays close attention to detail, including refashioned church pews and striking paintings, including one of Swift himself.

3. Eat a green bagel from the carnegie deli. Today, you can get a green bagel in honor of St Patricks day, so even if you’re not globally conscious, at least today you can say you go green.

4. Watch Irish movies at Nitehawk Cinema. All month my very favorite movie theater in Williamsburg will be highlighting Irish films and actors with their Irish Thrills brunch series. Movies to be screened include the gorgeously shot In Bruges and The Usual Suspects. Through March.

5. Relax on the couch with a Krups Irish Coffee. Maybe you don’t feel like going out at all. I certainly wouldn’t judge you. Instead, stay in, and if you have a Krups, whip yourself up a fitting Irish coffee. It’s the perfect at home St paddys day drink, mixing whiskey and coffee with a dab of sugar and cream.
