31 day Horror movie challenge 2021: Sequels + Reboots

It’s that time again, for horror fans to excessively express their love of the genre through their community. The creative outlet and growth of horror challenges dominate Twitter corners during the month of October. Becoming more prevalent with each passing year. A practice which even those who pride themselves on individuality can’t avoid. Especially as the pandemic rages on, this self expression is a way to channel the stressors of real life. This year’s horror movies challenge 2021 will celebrate a love of sequels and reboots. In honor of Halloween Kills, arriving on Peacock (and in theaters) October 15th, and the SYFY new Chucky horror series starting October 12th.

Normally, I wouldn’t go out of my way to praise reboots. As any good movie lover knows, there are far too many of them, and less original ideas, which we really need. At the same time, it’s exciting to see both of these fresh, new installments in the long running franchises.

Horror sequels don’t really get a fair shake. But in reality, they’ve been some of the greatest horror movies of the past 50 years. And with so many reboots successful enough to warrant follow ups, new horror sequels are on the rise too.

This October, in fact, the return of popular horror series are everywhere. Besides Halloween Kills, and the new Chucky series, there’s also a remake of favorite 80’s slasher Slumber Party Massacre, also on SYFY. New releases The Addams Family 2, Escape Room 2, and Venom:Let there be Carnage. Plus, the milestone anniversaries of classic horrors like The Evil Dead and Scream. They both return to the big screen for a limited run.

It all makes for a pretty busy month. Even Rifftrax is getting involved. The comedy trio is hosting a special nationwide screening of Amityville 4: The Evil Escapes.

So in that spirit, let this year’s 31 days of horror movie challenge 2021 begin!
