A visit to Bruges is a magical time in a truly special place. Certain areas look like you’re literally inside a postcard. Other hidden nooks are so picturesque they almost feel fake. There’s nothing else like it, and while it is small, it’s 238 square miles of charm. Filled with historic landscape, and beautiful buildings. Quiet, cobblestone streets to explore and a bustling square where you can find some of the best things to eat in Bruges.
And with National Waffle Day this month, what better time to honor one of Belgium’s trademarks, the ultimate Belgian waffle.
Here are three of the top things to eat in Bruges while visiting:
1. Belgian Waffles with all the fixings. Belgium kinda knows what they’re doing here, so it shows when you visit. Waffle stands are sprinkled around every corner, displaying a vast array of colorful extras and toppings. Plan a visit to the famous Freds for one of the best in town.
2. Mussels and fries. Take time to chill and people watch in the Square. Also, if you’ve seen In Bruges, you’ll remember the Belfry of Bruges, a medieval bell tower in the centre of the city. For us movie buffs, eating near that film spot was pretty cool. Mussels, bread to dip, and a pint make for a perfect afternoon in the middle of Bruges. In the Spring it gets crowded, but it’s worth a wait for a good seat in the middle of the action.
3. Chocolate. When you think of Belgium’s famous foods, certain things come to mind. Those aforementioned waffles, and of course, Belgian chocolate. In Bruges, there are lots of options for the chocolate lover. Pick your own stands, or gourmet boutiques like the famous Dumon Chocolates.
