In today’s world, every month has 30 or so days of something supposedly worth honoring, from eating cheeseburgers, to talking like a pirate. But lest we forget, there are also entire national months worth celebrating too. And since breakfast is my very favorite meal to consume, it felt right to share to those who may, or may not already celebrate this new high, holy month, that September is, in fact, National Breakfast Month. In the old days, working a 9-6 job in the fashion district, breakfast was barely a thought. It mostly took the form of an occasional run to the deli for an egg and cheese sandwich. Now, I’m older, wiser, and the commute to my office is only a few feet away. But that doesn’t mean I don’t have to occasionally still enjoy breakfast on the go. This month, as we honor breakfast, lets also honor a few breakfast on the go ideas that make our lives easier, and certainly tastier.
1. Modern Oats. The ideal breakfast on the go; these little instant oatmeal bowls come in all sorts of fanciful flavors like apple walnut, mango blackberry, Chocolate cherry, and my personal favorite AM pick-me-up this fall, nuts and seeds. Just add boiling water to the mix, whether it’s on the way out, or planted at your desk. It’s an instant treat that doesn’t taste so instant.
2. Ozery Bakery Morning Rounds. There are a million easy choices to make when you’re headed out the door and need to grab breakfast, and few of them are ideal. A roll and butter, cranberry muffin, and glazed doughnut are fine, but you know what’s way better – an easy morning treat that tastes good, and is actually good for me. The morning rounds by Ozery are little pita rounds that double as bread, or toast. They’re perfect with peanut butter, or nutella spread, topped with easy add-ons, like bananas and apples. Or use creamcheese for a healthier version of your morning bagel. They make a great snack while at home, or headed out the door. The rounds come in date & chia, apple cinnamon, cranberry orange, and museli. Buy them here.
3. Kefir shake to go. Every since I discovered Kefir last year I’ve been completely obsessed, and most days, it winds up being either my breakfast or afternoon snack. Tasting like greek yogurt, or a thick shake it’s enough to fill you up, and keep you going for a few hours. I love both Lifeway, whose insane pomegrante flavor I just discovered, and the Trader Joes Kefir, which has a quite tasty blueberry version. I drink mine in a mason jar (of course because I’m a white girl), but throw it in a thermos on mornings when I have to run, but can’t bear to do without.
