Eat, Pay, Love~ Duane Reade Happy & Healthy Spring Issue for All your Grocery Needs

“I am a member of the Collective Bias®  Social Fabric® Community.  This content has been compensated as part of a social shopper insights study for Collective Bias® and Duane Reade. #DRHappyHealthy #cbias #SocialFabric

In New York City, we all come from different walks of life. We look different, act different, and interact differently. But there is one thing we can all relate to and understand.. food.

Whether you’re a busy, single city dweller who never has time for anything but a quick fix, or the type who writes out their weekly family food needs ahead of time, we all figure out, find, and eat in our own, comfortable way. I had gotten very accustomed to an easy weekly shopping trip, but now, living with someone, I take my grocery shopping even more seriously, from fridge inspection, to grocery list making.

Duane Reade has grown enormously in the past few years, with almost every New York City store having had a complete redux, redesign, and expansion including not only the usually talked about Look Boutique, but also another important factor, the grocery store. What was once a great store to pickup a snack, or drink has become a supermarket in of itself. And believe it or not, with a frozen food section, dairy aisle, and sandwiches and pastas hub, you can actually buy a week’s worth of food for your household for well under $100.

If you’re a fly by the seat of your pants person, go check out the closest Duane Reade, grab the Happy & Healthy spring issue by the front, and pick yourself up some lunch, dinner, or afternoon snack. Download the App to find the one closest to you.

But, if you’re more like me, and pride yourself on your girly, list making abilities, you’re going to want to get ahead of the game, and check out the super store’s latest spring issue online. Keep in mind, this is not your typical circular. It features cover girls like Fergie, tips on how to stay healthy and fit, ideas for a healthy summer from sunscreen to food tips, and of course, all the store coupons and discounts you’ll need for your shopping excursion.

For an organizational dork like me, the Happy & Healthy online issue is a list makers dream. With every section highlighting a different set of products, it’s easy to find what you need, what’s on sale, and what are the best items of the week. I made my way through through it like a leopard stalking its prey, writing down everything I need, completing my grocery list, and getting ready to execute.

List in hand, rewards card in pocket, I hit the store to pick up all my essentials. The Delish  brand offers some amazing, affordable items, and this week they did not disappoint. With 2 for $6 pizzas, 2 for $5 priobiotic snack mixes, $1.50 penne pasta, and 2 for $5 pasta sauces, I was able to pick up some great meals and snacks for the week, including other great sale items like Nice! chicken nuggets, perfect for a quick easy dinner with pasta. And though I’m trying to be good, in the spirit of the season, I couldn’t resist some Nice! ice cream sundae cones for only $2.99.

I might not have picked the healthiest options, and they might not offer a produce section (yet!), but for about $30 I was able to pick up 4 nights worth of dinners for me and my boyfriend, some healthy probiotic snacks, lunch, and even a little indulgence.

In an expensive city like New York, nothing feels better then getting a lot for a little. If this is a motto that the man in your life didn’t necessarily understand as a rationalization to the 4 new shirts hanging in your closet, this is sure to get through to him. And his stomach…

Heavy Cargo: One Vest, 2 Ways

I got my Sanctuary vest when I was working at a corporate fashion office, from a random sample sale. It was one of those rare office sample sale finds, the kind you take for granted at the time. But I became quite fond of it, and started wearing it over strapless dresses and oxford shirts.

This season the cargo vest is all the hottest item to pick up. From H&M to Balmain, every designer and store brings their own take on the trend, be it army, moto, or vintage. It’s hard to stand out from the crowd, when such a cute piece is having it’s fad moment, but if you play your cards right, you’ll manage to remain stylish in an otherwise trendy moment.

Me, I am just using this as an excuse to wear my Sanctuary even more, and thanking god that for once, I didn’t shell out any cash to remain true to my look. It’s versatility makes it even more wearable, which is not helping my obsession any. Though I recently wore it several times here, and here as an added layer this winter, this time I tried to test it’s seasonal diversity.

Cargo Vest, Sanctuary. This one is no longer available, but Sheinside.com has an awesome cargo vest in very similar style at a steal for only $24.00

White Lace Dress, H&M, $20. This is from last season, but it was so popular, they brought it back. It’s in stores now.

leopard Flats, Yosi Samra.I found this brand recently, when I went to Beverly Hills for the Lucky Fabb conference. I met Morgan, representing the brand in all her adorableness, and we lamented on the plight of the Nyc girl foot, and the never ending search for a comfortable flat we can wear while we walk, and store easily in our bag. Amazing how an 80′s secretary ritual is now a coveted find.

When she let me pick out a pair for myself I immediately went right for the leopard, and went home excited to have an awesome new pair of shoes, but skeptical of their efforts.

Seems like today, the once new idea of a rollaway “in transit” shoe is everywhere. With brands from Kushyfoot, to Gap, and store brands, there’s lots of choices but few that live up to the hype, or that you can actually wear on the city streets. But Yosi Samra has officially put an end to that search.

These were comfortable to walk in and didn’t feel like I was walking right on the ground, like some of the other ones I’ve tried, and though I didn’t have any heels to change into, they did roll up nicely right up into their perfect little dust bag.

Buy your’s here at yosisamra.com, and get to stepping… outside.

The Stinger ~ No Pain, No Gain… D.I.Y. Window Pane Fashion by Kate Spade Saturday

Sneaks, Skirts, and More To Color.
If Kate Spade is a hit tv show, then Kate Spade Saturday is it’s new, highly anticipated spinoff. But unlike so many other spinoffs, this one has staying power. We’re talking Frasier and A Different World, not Joey.
The new, more affordable, casual line has all the girly appeal that a Spade customer would want, and almost feels like some big, hidden, creative outlet for someone who has just been waiting to unveil it. And with new products coming out every Saturday, there is clearly no shortage of  ideas.
Case in point, the window pane collection. Take one successful trend, add a set of colored markers, and let the customer become the designer. I love the creativity and independence of this collection. There are no boundaries, no rules. Just fashion.
My must have off the list? 100% the Sneakers.

Spring State ~ 5 Great Ways to Sway into the New Nyc Season

New York City is a city of fickle extremes. Freezing or hot, bustling or dead, we switch from on to off with the ease of changing a light bulb and just like that everything changes. Sweaters become tank tops, shoes turn open tied, and your local Korean owned nail spa suddenly has twice as much yapping and gossip, and Essie polish overflowing inside.

Manhattan is an island thats disposition changes with the season. Winter is spent hermitting, self diagnosing S.A.D. disorder, and other exciting Web MD health issues, and lamenting on the sad depressive state of all the islanders. But then suddenly, like a cool, unexpected but thankful breeze, the tides change, season progress and in an moment, everything’s different.

People have a bounce in their step, a smile on their face, and a certain hope for the days that lie ahead. There is a hope instilled in us that we thrust upon this city, one in which the temperature of the weather directly affects the way we as humans decide to treat each other.

A hope in which your walk to work will be a little lighter, your day a little brighter, and the warmer weather a signifier that good things lie ahead. And how do we know this? We dont. But something about that gorgeous sunny day, which allowed us to go outside with only a t-shirt on, somehow simultaneously put the belief in us that, if only for that day, life is good.

And most importantly, the hope that our favorite designer sandals will go on sale, and those J crew shorts will still be in stock. Because as every season changes, so does the city, and of course, the sales….

As we swing full force into the spring season, summer is fast approaching, and before we know it, the season will change yet again, and as always, the city with it.  As the days and our dispositions warm up, there’s always a few things that start to get the gears in motion. So New Yorkers, rev up your seasonal engines….

rulesofcivility

click here to buy on amazon.com

The book, The Rules of Civility is to old school Manhattan what the Great Gatsby is to the  1920′s socialite Hamptons lifestyle. And in the same way Fitzgerald sweeps us into a time and place we picture, and imagine ourselves in, Rules engages us in the exact same way. So it’s fitting that with May approaching and Great Gatsby only weeks from finally opening, that this book gets thrust into focal point, immediately becoming an obsession. It started about six weeks ago, when the Amor Towles novel became our latest book club pick, but became a more serious issue when I found myself actually underlining passages, and dog earing page after page. It’s the book for the ultimate islander; an homage to the native New Yorker and that which continues to make the city so special. Katherine Content, the protagonist and native herself glides in and out of each season of New York as smoothly as the actual chapters that signify them. Whether you’re a Manhattanite or not, it’s a must read.

Get in the spirit of the season by seeing the anticipated remake of the Great Gatsby. Not only is it sure to inspire head scarves and flapper styles for months to come, but it also is set to have an amazing soundtrack which Jay Z had a hand in, as well as showcasing an amazing jewelry collab with Tiffany and Co.

To find out more about the anticipated remake (which I am obsessively excited for!) click here. It opens May 10th.

The NYBG orchid Show  always christens the new season, and much like Spring, blink and you miss it. I love hopping on the railroad at Grand Central, and in a half hour, being transported into another world. A lush, tropical indoor paradise where orchids abound, and beauty is peeking behind every corner. It’s over in a few days, so if you haven’t already, there’s a few days left to check it out.

Spring State- 5 Great Ways to Sway into the New Nyc Season

SPRING your mojo into action by celebrating those things which signify it best. For starters, represent your island, and look cute at the same time. Pair up this adorable nyc tank from boohoo.com, the awesome UK website, with some leather shorts, strappy heels, and you’ve got an outfit for that first really warm night out. The one where the pure joy of realizing  it’s warm enough to start sitting outside again is crushed by the moments later announcement that the wait will be about 60 to 70 minutes. Hey, do you think you were the only one with that idea?

Print top , $16

Though you probably have a million in the back of your closet, you still deserve to christen the new season with a pair of comfy, walking ready sandals. I love these huarache ones from Mossimo at Target. $23

Flats sandals

For the days when jackets have already been totally dismissed from the ‘by the door’ lineup, but you could still use something for the pm chill…Get one extra comfy and wrapped, so that on your next plane ride, it can   double as your pillow.

Blue shawl

No Season is complete without the new line of Essie being unveiled in every salon, and in turn, no hands or feet will be spring ready unti they’ve scrubbed, massaged, and polished up in their best pinks, oranges, purples, greens, and blues.

Essie
kohls.com

New seasons aren’t just our time to unveil our new best selves. It’s also the unveiling of summer action movies, exhibits, and new books. I’ve already mentioned my most recent book club read, and one of my new favorites. But I also love coffee table books. Mix that with a love of NYC, and my continued inability to read a new york city subway map, and you have a must read. Mapping Manhattan: a Love (and Sometimes Hate) Story in Maps is 75 New Yorkers different stories on the city, told through images and maps. Can’t wait to check this out. $12, on Amazon.

DailyCandy

Seasons change, and so do our scents. Jump into spring with a new signature. Personally, there is a part of me that remains devoted to Jo Malone, but with so many new scents to choose from, you can go with this classic, and still find a new smell to put a spring in your step.

Don’t Mess With Taxes~ Your Best Tax Day

It comes every year. Its the same date every year. We all know to prepare for it every single year, in, and out like a mechanical clock continually running it’s gears. And yet, today the post offices were filled to capacity with anxious people, tapping their feet, and procrastinating their way to the front of the line.

For the first year ever, I actually owed money instead of awaiting my hefty return. I sat there in the appointment, I heard everything, and understood it, and yet, I can’t tell you specifically what that happened. I can tell you that I will find another way to partake in my seasonal splurge, even if it doesn’t come in the form of a check from the government.

But that shouldn’t stop you. As the day nears closer to it’s end, the clock will strike midnight, thus ending another year of dreaded procrastination. Everything will go back to normal, post office lines will only be somewhat annoyingly long, and you will soon come into a small, but exciting lump sum of money, which you will then go out and spend accordingly. But whether you save it, splurge on it, buy an outfit, or buy a trip, one trait is always universal. The ability to choose what you do with what you get. And that is a powerful choice.
